When you misplace a crucial item that's part of your daily life —like a set of keys —it's often when you're in a hurry. It's one of the better lost-and-found device we've tested so far, but it does have some some drawbacks. You'll need to replace your Tile every year due to its non-removable battery, and Android users will have to continue taking close watch of their valuables, as Tile only currently supports iOS. Tile is compatible with iOS 7 devices that support Bluetooth LE iPhone 4S and later, third-gen iPad or later, iPad mini and mini Retina, and the fifth-gen iPod touch and later. The company claims the device will work with Android devices once Bluetooth LE in Android becomes more stable. That means for now, it's limited to iOS users only. To test Tile, I paired it with an iPhone 5s. I then asked fellow PCMag analyst Eugene Kim to hide my Tile-attached keys somewhere in the 5,000 square foot PC Labs, and I set about finding them using just the free Tile app's proximity feature. Proximity is measured by a circle with eight sections; the more illuminated sections there are, the closer you are to Tile as shown on right. When the app indicated that I couldn't get any closer, it became clear that my keys were hidden out of sight, so I turned on the Find function, which makes Tile beep, and found my keys inside the mini-fridge within seconds. Other items that may be Tiled using an included sticker include bags, purses, laptops, tablets, and the company itself even suggests bikes, which could work well with the aforementioend lost-and-found feature assuming the thief doesn't remove Tile first. I would like to use Tile with my wallet, as I misplace it more than anything else, but I didn't feel comfortable putting the sticker on my wallet in case it damaged the leather; it would add some bulk, too. The company claims that Tile's non-removable battery lasts a year, and it will send you a reminder when it's running low, at which point you'll be offered the chance to order new Tiles. It'll send you an envelope to return your old Tiles to the company for recycling, too. Still, this is less ideal—and more expensive—than simply replacing the battery yourself, which you can do with other devices like the.
